We take pride in our services, but we also want to give you some good advice when it comes to getting ready for relocation, including some helpful pointers for when you pack the articles you definitely don’t want to leave behind — your clothes. While throwing some essentials in a duffle bag for vacation is a no-brainer, transporting you and your family’s wardrobe can prove more difficult and cumbersome than you initially imagined.

Check out this video on how to pack up your clothes for a long-distance move, then continue reading for a deeper dive into how Dan The Mover can help you out when you’re in it for the long-haul.

Donate or Toss What You Don’t Wear

Take an inventory of all of your clothes before you begin packing. There may be ill-fitting shirts that have fallen out of your personal fashion to donate or old pants that should just be thrown away. Discarding or donating items you have no use for anymore is the first step in allowing for a swifter pack-up.

Think Seasonally

Avoid misplacing your good sweaters in with your summer wear by taking the time to organize by season. This is especially important when considering the time of year and the overall climate of your new home. Have the clothes you’ll want to wear right away easily accessible. If you’re going the extra mile, keep the types of clothing (jackets, shirts, pants) together and label your boxes. This will take all the guess work out of unpacking.

Use Your Suitcases

Your long-distance moving may not be a vacation, but it doesn’t mean you can’t utilize the luggage you already own! You’ll be able to cut down on packaging costs and pack more efficiently. Suitcases are especially handy when it comes to heavy or bulky clothing items like sneakers, boots, and other types of footwear.

Consider Space/Vacuum Bags

Space-saver bags help reduce the space that clothes take up and are easy to transport. Keep in mind that they aren’t just for a one-time move — you can use them later to store out-of-season clothes or linens.

Use Clothes to Package Fragile Items

Say hello to a creative way to be efficient. Use scarves, socks, t-shirts, and sweaters as cushioning for your items that are prone to breaking or damage.

Keep Clothes on Hangers

Save time and money on ironing and dry-cleaning by keeping suits and dresses stackable and moving-friendly.

Start Early

Give yourself plenty of time to plan and organize. Make it easy for yourself when you get to your new home by knowing where everything is.

September 11, 2019 at 5:46 pm | Essential Packing Supplies for Home and Office Moves

As the leading providers of residential and office moving services in Bucks County, PA, we help hundreds of homes and businesses move buildings every year. Before we arrive, you should have the majority of your items packed so that they can be quickly loaded and moved immediately. We’ve created this post to help you get started with the essential packing supplies and included tips on how to pack up before a move.

When starting to pack, the following supplies are a must:

Boxes

Although many moving companies will provide boxes for purchase, they can also be sourced for free. Grocery stores, retailers, and liquor stores use hundreds of boxes every week. They frequently throw these boxes away or recycle them, and they are often happy to provide them to people who require boxes to help pack for an upcoming move.

Blankets

For tables and other furniture edges, you’ll want to protect the wooden materials from incurring scratches. By wrapping the furniture up in a blanket, you can save cash from spending on rentals.

Padding

Padding is essential for protecting fragile objects and breakables. We recommend buying plenty of bubble wrap, packing paper, and similar materials to cushion any items that could break in transit. Consider using old towels, socks, and t-shirts if you are looking to save money. The beauty of this method is that these items would have to be transported anyway, so you’re packing two things at once!

Tape

Duct tape and packing tape is king when it comes to moving to a new location. Make sure that all your boxes are sufficiently taped to avoid them spilling their contents, as well as protecting them from splitting under the pressure of heavy items.

General Packing Advice

Try to pack like items together. Start the packing of each box with a layer of padding such as newspapers, then add the heaviest items. Label every single box by room and by contents. Labeling saves so much time and effort when it comes to unpacking. Finally, pack a couple of “first day” boxes filled up with essential items: Hammers, screwdrivers, paper plates, utensils, and any other items you will need right away. Any essential items, such as medications, should travel with you.
